Most directories have a quiet problem. Somebody is paying for position and you are not told which entries those are, so the whole list has to be read with suspicion.

This one splits the page in two and says which half is which. One slot per category is sold to the highest bid and labeled sponsored. Everything under it is ordered by votes and clicks, and no amount of money moves it.

That split is not a compromise, it is the point. A ranking that can be bought is worth nothing to a reader, which makes it worth nothing to a sponsor either. Keeping the community list honest is what makes the sponsored slot above it worth paying for.

The sponsor also appears in the community ranking, at whatever position it actually earned, marked as the sponsor. If a tool paid for the top slot and sits at number fourteen on merit, the page says so.

Some outbound links carry an affiliate parameter, which is how the directory pays for itself between bids. It changes no ranking anywhere. The full rules are here.
